Where it came from
The 1858 one-cent piece holds the distinction of being the first decimal coinage struck for the Province of Canada, replacing the antiquated system of pounds, shillings, and pence. Commissioned by the colonial government to align with the decimal systems gaining traction in North America, the coinage was minted in London by the Royal Mint to facilitate standardized trade and commerce across the diverse British North American territories.
Designed by Leonard Charles Wyon, the obverse features the young portrait of Queen Victoria, while the reverse displays a wreath of maple leaves encircling the denomination and date. This design was aesthetically influenced by the popular British copper coinage of the era, and it was met with significant practical utility upon its release, effectively serving as the foundational element of the modern Canadian currency system.
