1 Chuckram - Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma

The 1860 silver Chuckram was minted during the reign of Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore. This small, unique currency unit reflected the distinct monetary traditions of the princely state in southern India, which maintained its own coinage system separate from British India. These coins were notable for their tiny size and distinct composition, serving as a functional piece of daily commerce within the kingdom.

The design of the Chuckram features traditional motifs representing the royal authority of Travancore, often including elements like the conch shell, which served as the state emblem. As a result of the state's proximity to maritime trade routes, these coins were produced under the strict oversight of the royal mint to ensure standard weight and purity, providing a tangible link to the administrative autonomy of 19th-century Travancore before the eventual transition to the standard rupee coinage.
