Where it came from
The 1992 Australian one-dollar coin commemorates the participation of the Australian team in the Games of the XXV Olympiad held in Barcelona. Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, this commemorative piece was designed to celebrate the spirit of international athletic competition and remains a notable entry in Australia's long-standing tradition of circulating commemorative coinage. It serves as a physical record of Australia's sporting history during the early 1990s.
The obverse features the third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf, which was the standard portrait used on Australian coinage during that period. The reverse, designed by artist Wojtek Pietranik, features a stylized depiction of an athlete in motion, capturing the dynamism of the Olympic games. The coin was widely circulated and well-received by the Australian public, reflecting a period of national pride regarding the country's representation on the global stage.
