Where it came from
The Australian 20-cent coin was introduced in 1966 following the nation's transition to decimal currency. This specific 1998 proof version features the iconic platypus design by Stuart Devlin, an acclaimed goldsmith and jeweler who served as the official designer of Australian decimal coinage. The platypus was selected as a quintessential symbol of unique Australian fauna, intended to anchor the new currency in the country's natural heritage.
This edition features the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The effigy was introduced to Australian coinage in 1999, though this 1998 proof set represents a specific high-quality collector issue struck by the Royal Australian Mint. These fine silver proof strikes were created for numismatic enthusiasts who prioritize finish and precious metal content, standing in contrast to the circulating cupro-nickel versions found in everyday transactions.
