Where it came from
The 2012 New Zealand 'Dwarves' one-dollar coin was issued by the New Zealand Post as part of a commemorative collection celebrating the release of Peter Jackson’s film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Struck as legal tender for the realm, these coins were produced to capitalize on the international interest in the film series, which was filmed extensively in New Zealand. The design served as a promotional vehicle, merging national identity with the global popularity of Middle-earth iconography.
The coin features an intricate engraving of the company of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a standard requirement for Commonwealth coinage. The series was designed to appeal primarily to numismatists and fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptations. Upon release, it was well-received by the collecting community for its high-quality finish and its role as a tangible piece of cinematic marketing, reflecting the significant cultural impact of the film industry on New Zealand’s commemorative numismatic output.
