Where it came from
The 2014 Smaug the Terrible one-dollar coin was struck by the New Zealand Mint as part of a commemorative series celebrating the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Issued as legal tender in New Zealand, the series was designed to appeal to both numismatists and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, capturing the cinematic aesthetic of Peter Jackson’s film adaptations.
The reverse of the coin features an intricate engraving of Smaug, the dragon from the Hobbit legendarium, set against a backdrop of his hoard. The design reflects the high-detail relief work typical of modern collector currency produced by the New Zealand Mint, aiming to evoke the sense of wealth and danger associated with the character. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by the fantasy collector community for its fidelity to the film's visual design.
