Where it came from
Issued by the New Zealand Post in 2013, this one-dollar coin was created as part of an official legal tender commemorative series to celebrate the release of the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. These coins were minted to highlight New Zealand's unique role as the primary filming location for Peter Jackson's cinematic adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, serving as both a functional currency and a highly sought-after collectible for fans of the franchise.
The coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, while the reverse showcases detailed imagery inspired by the Middle-earth universe. The design was produced through a collaborative effort between the New Zealand Post and the film production studio, aiming to translate the intricate aesthetic of the films onto a metal canvas. The series was well-received upon release, drawing significant interest from numismatists and fantasy enthusiasts globally due to its limited mintage and thematic connection to New Zealand's cultural identity.
