Where it came from
The 2018 Australian one-dollar coin commemorating the Centenary of the WWI Armistice was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to mark one hundred years since the cessation of hostilities in 1918. Part of a broader national remembrance program, this commemorative issue serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australians during the Great War, reflecting the cultural significance of the Armistice in the Australian national identity.
The reverse design features a stylized representation of a poppy, the enduring symbol of remembrance, intertwined with the text 'Lest We Forget.' This design was executed by the Royal Australian Mint’s internal design team, following the standard practice of incorporating Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by both numismatic collectors and members of the public seeking a tangible connection to the historical milestone of the 1918 armistice.
