Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2020, this one-dollar coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the 'Welcome Stranger' gold nugget. The design honors the historic 1869 find in Moliagul, Victoria, which remains the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded. As part of a series celebrating Australia's mining heritage, the piece serves as a numismatic reflection on the gold rush era that significantly shaped the country's economic and social development during the 19th century.
The coin features the sixth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark on the obverse, while the reverse showcases a stylized representation of the nugget itself. The artistry focuses on the raw, irregular texture of the gold, rendered in fine silver proof quality to contrast with the polished fields of the coin. The design was received by collectors as a faithful and elegant tribute to a cornerstone of Australian frontier history, emphasizing both the majesty of the monarch and the significance of the nation's geological riches.
