Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2020, this ten-dollar gold proof coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the 'Welcome Stranger' gold nugget. The design commemorates the monumental 1869 find in Moliagul, Victoria, which remains the largest alluvial gold nugget ever discovered. This piece reflects the Mint's commitment to honoring significant milestones in Australia's rich mining heritage through high-purity numismatic issues.
The coin features a detailed depiction of the nugget itself, rendered to capture its unique, irregular shape and texture. The obverse showcases Jody Clark's sixth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which has become the standard for Australian coinage since its introduction. The design was intended to evoke the excitement and transformative impact of the gold rush era, and it was received by collectors as a sophisticated blend of historical storytelling and refined proof craftsmanship.
