1 Falus (Qandahar)

The 1 Falus coin from Qandahar, minted around 1700, emerged during a period of intense geopolitical transition in the region. Situated at the crossroads of the Safavid Empire and the rising influence of local tribal powers, Qandahar served as a vital strategic hub. These copper coins were primarily issued for local commerce to facilitate daily transactions, reflecting the administrative efforts of regional governors to maintain a standardized currency system amidst frequent military conflicts over the city's control.

Designed as a humble denomination, the Falus prioritized utility over elaborate artistic flair, typically featuring simple calligraphy or regional motifs emblematic of the local mints. Because these coins were often struck in base metals like copper and handled heavily in bustling marketplaces, they were not intended for long-term hoarding. Their current value to collectors lies in their role as tactile markers of the economic life in 18th-century Central Asia, providing historians with evidence of the fluid borders and shifting sovereignties that defined the era.
