Where it came from
The 1 Fen coin was minted in 1939 for Manchukuo, the puppet state established in Northeast China by the Empire of Japan. It served as legal tender within the region during the reign of Puyi, the final emperor of the Qing dynasty, who was installed as the ruler of Manchukuo under the reign title Kangde. The design reflects the political aspirations of the Japanese occupation, utilizing traditional iconography such as the orchid crest of the Manchu imperial family while functioning as a tool of colonial economic integration.
The coins were struck in copper-nickel alloy, featuring a standardized aesthetic typical of Japanese-controlled territories in the 1930s. The design was orchestrated by the puppet administration to emphasize the legitimacy of the Kangde emperor, though the currency was largely intended to displace Chinese Nationalist currency and facilitate trade tied to the Japanese yen. These pieces remain significant today as artifacts of the geopolitical turmoil of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the collapse of the Qing imperial legacy.
