Where it came from
The 1953 Australian florin was minted during a pivotal transitional period for the Commonwealth of Australia. Following the death of King George VI, this issue introduced the first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by the acclaimed British sculptor Mary Gillick. The coin was produced as part of a general currency redesign to reflect the new monarch's reign, marking the start of a significant era in Australian numismatics.
This specific 1953 issue is notable among collectors for the omission of the abbreviation 'F:D:' (Fidei Defensor, or Defender of the Faith) from the Queen's titles. While the Latin title was included on British coinage, its absence on the Australian version was a point of administrative oversight that led to public debate at the time. The design remains a significant historical artifact, capturing the intersection of colonial tradition and the emerging identity of post-war Australia.
