Where it came from
The 1954 Australian Florin was minted to commemorate the first visit of a reigning monarch to Australia. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip toured the nation extensively between February and April of that year, an event that drew massive crowds and served to reinforce ties between the Commonwealth and the Crown following the death of King George VI.
The reverse of the coin was designed by the artist William Leslie Bowles. It features a stylized design incorporating a crown flanked by two crossed sceptres, encircled by the inscription 'AUSTRALIA' and the year '1954'. The obverse carries the first portrait of the Queen, designed by Mary Gillick, which depicts her as a young monarch wearing a laurel wreath. The issue was well-received by the public as a meaningful souvenir of a historic royal occasion and remains a staple of Australian numismatic collections.
