Where it came from
The 1 Kreuzer coin issued under Maria Theresa in 1749 emerged during a pivotal era for the Habsburg Monarchy. Following the War of the Austrian Succession, the Empress initiated sweeping administrative and financial reforms to stabilize the imperial economy. This copper coinage was designed to facilitate everyday commerce and serve as a reliable denomination for the common population, reflecting the centralizing efforts of her reign.
The design features the distinct iconography of the House of Habsburg, typically showcasing the imperial double-headed eagle or the Empress's heraldry, which served to unify the diverse territories under her rule. These coins were minted in large quantities across various imperial mints to ensure consistent circulation. While utilitarian in nature, they were well-received for their standard weight and reliability, becoming a staple of the Austrian monetary system throughout the mid-18th century.
