Where it came from
The 1990 Cuban 1 Peso coin, featuring the First Voyage of Christopher Columbus, was minted as part of a commemorative series leading up to the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. Produced by the Central Bank of Cuba, these issues were intended to capitalize on numismatic interest in colonial history and the quincentennial celebrations that were observed across various nations during the early 1990s.
The design highlights the explorer’s flagship, the Santa Maria, rendered in a classic maritime commemorative style typical of late 20th-century commemorative coinage. While these pieces were issued as legal tender, their primary function was for the international collector market, and they reflect the aesthetic standards of Cuban minting at the time, which frequently combined national iconography with themes of broader historical interest to appeal to global enthusiasts of nautical and colonial numismatics.
