Where it came from
The 1990 Cuban 10 Pesos Piedfort, commemorating the 498th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, was minted as part of a broader series celebrating the explorer's voyages. The term 'Piedfort' denotes a coin struck on a planchet that is twice as thick as a standard issue, a tradition dating back to medieval times when such coins were produced as presentation pieces for royalty or high-ranking officials.
Designed during a period when the Cuban numismatic program gained global attention for its high-quality commemorative issues, this piece features intricate relief work typical of the era's craftsmanship. It serves as a physical record of the shifting historical narrative surrounding the Quincentenary of the Discovery of the Americas, reflecting the dual nature of these items as both legitimate currency and collectible objects designed for the international numismatic market.
