1 Sovereign - Victoria

The 1871 Australian Sovereign, minted in Sydney, represents a pivotal moment in the expansion of the British Empire's monetary influence. Following the discovery of gold in Australia in the 1850s, the Royal Mint established branches in Sydney and later Melbourne to process local bullion directly. This coin was produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, featuring the iconic 'Young Head' portrait designed by William Wyon, which had been the standard for British coinage since her ascension to the throne in 1837.

The design is characterized by the young Queen Victoria encircled by a laurel wreath on the obverse, while the reverse displays the St. George and the Dragon motif, a classic design by Benedetto Pistrucci that became synonymous with the gold sovereign. These coins were minted to the same strict specifications as those struck in London, ensuring they were interchangeable throughout the British Empire. Their production served both as a practical solution for local currency needs and as a potent symbol of imperial authority and stability in the burgeoning Australian colonies.
