Where it came from
The 1887 Australian Sovereign was struck at the Sydney Mint, one of the colonial branches established by the Royal Mint to facilitate the processing of gold discovered during the Australian gold rushes. These coins were minted to provide a reliable, standardized currency for the British Empire, ensuring that Australian gold could be circulated as legal tender across global trade networks while maintaining the rigorous quality standards of the British sovereign.
The coin features the 'Jubilee Head' portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm. Introduced in 1887 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Queen's accession, the design remains one of the most recognizable in numismatic history. While the portrait was intended to project a sense of mature imperial dignity, it faced mixed criticism at the time for its stylized, almost ornamental depiction of the monarch, yet it remains a cornerstone piece for collectors of British colonial coinage.
