The 1856 Victoria Pattern Sovereign represents a pivotal moment in the history of Australian coinage, emerging shortly after the establishment of the Sydney Mint in 1855. As the first branch of the Royal Mint outside of London, the Sydney facility was created to process the massive influx of gold from the Victorian and New South Wales gold rushes. This specific pattern coin was produced as the administration sought to establish a unique design for Australian gold currency that would remain distinct from the imperial sovereigns minted in Britain.

The design of this pattern features the iconic portrait of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, encircled by a unique wreath design intended to signify the coin's colonial origin. The intention was to replace the standard imperial motifs with imagery specifically associated with Australia, though these patterns were ultimately rejected by the Imperial authorities in London.
