The 1929 Junk dollar pattern was commissioned by the Nationalist government of the Republic of China as part of an effort to standardize the national currency. Minted at the Vienna Mint in Austria, these pattern coins were created to demonstrate the technical capabilities of foreign mints vying for the contract to produce China's new coinage. The design, famously featuring a sailing junk on the reverse and a portrait of Sun Yat-sen on the obverse, was intended to evoke themes of national unity and modernization during a period of significant political transition.

The design was influenced by the aesthetic trends of the era, blending traditional Chinese iconography with Western numismatic precision. Italian engraver A. Lotti is often credited with the intricate work on the portrait and nautical elements. While the design was highly regarded for its artistic merit and technical execution, it remained a pattern and never entered general circulation. It is historically significant for representing the diplomatic and economic engagement between the fledgling Chinese Republic and European financial institutions of the early 20th century.
