Where it came from
This 10-dollar coin was struck by the Niue government in 2002 as part of a commemorative series celebrating the immense global cultural impact of the Pokémon franchise. During this period, Niue authorized a variety of legal tender coins featuring iconic characters from the series, marking a unique intersection between government-issued currency and Japanese pop culture exports.
The coin features a colored relief of Pikachu, the franchise's mascot, designed to appeal to younger collectors and fans of the series. While these coins are minted as legal tender in Niue, they were primarily produced for the numismatic collectible market rather than for circulation, reflecting the trend of small island nations issuing thematic coins to generate interest among international collectors of pop culture memorabilia.
