Where it came from
The 2021 Canadian 10 Dollars silver coin, featuring a werewolf motif, was released by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of their series exploring Canadian folklore and tales of the supernatural. This specific design was inspired by the legend of the Loup-garou, a staple of French-Canadian mythology that warns against those who break social or religious taboos, reflecting the Mint's strategy to blend national cultural history with high-quality numismatic art.
The coin was designed by artist Glen Loates, whose work for the Mint often emphasizes detailed, naturalistic depictions of wildlife and mythic creatures. His design for the werewolf reflects a focus on dramatic shadow and texture, intended to evoke the eerie atmosphere of a woodland transformation. Upon release, the series was received primarily by collectors of themed bullion and folk-horror enthusiasts for its intricate craftsmanship and the departure from traditional commemorative portraiture.
