10 Kreuzers - Hieronymus von Colloredo

This 10 Kreuzer coin was minted in 1772 in the Archbishopric of Salzburg during the reign of Hieronymus von Colloredo. Colloredo had recently ascended to the position of Prince-Archbishop, succeeding Sigismund von Schrattenbach. The coinage of this period served as a physical manifestation of the ecclesiastical authority and the political sovereignty maintained by the Prince-Archbishops over their territory within the Holy Roman Empire.

The design follows the traditional numismatic style of the late 18th-century Austrian and Germanic states, featuring the portrait of the Prince-Archbishop on the obverse and the Salzburg coat of arms or a religious emblem on the reverse. These coins were issued primarily to facilitate local trade and provide currency for the Archbishopric’s subjects. The craftsmanship reflects the formal, austere aesthetic favored by the administration of Colloredo, who is perhaps best remembered today for his complex relationship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
