Where it came from
The 1990 Cuban 10 Pesos coin was issued as part of a commemorative series celebrating the upcoming quincentenary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas. Produced by the Central Bank of Cuba, these coins were minted in anticipation of the 1992 anniversary, serving both as legal tender and as numismatic collectibles intended for the international market. The release reflected Cuba's state-sponsored tradition of producing high-quality commemorative coinage, which frequently featured historical motifs and nautical themes designed to appeal to global collectors.
The design of the coin features a detailed depiction of the Santa Maria, one of the three ships commanded by Columbus during his 1492 expedition. Struck in silver, the imagery was crafted to evoke the era of maritime exploration, emphasizing the craftsmanship associated with Cuban commemorative minting during this period. While these coins were widely distributed among collectors interested in the Columbian series, they were viewed primarily as bullion and commemorative objects rather than functional currency within the Cuban domestic economy.
