10 Pesos (Ptolomeo and Toscanelli)

The 1992 10 Pesos coin was issued by the Central Bank of Cuba as part of a commemorative series celebrating the quincentenary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. This particular issue features the figures of Ptolemy, the ancient astronomer whose geocentric model dominated scientific thought for centuries, and Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli, the Italian mathematician whose maps and correspondence significantly influenced Columbus’s belief that he could reach the East Indies by sailing westward across the Atlantic.

Struck at a time when Cuba was increasingly focused on numismatic issues for the international collector market, the coin reflects the thematic interest in the historical intersection of European maritime exploration and cartography. The design combines classical portraiture with nautical imagery, aiming to provide a visual narrative of the intellectual foundations that preceded the events of 1492. It remains a representative example of Cuban commemorative coinage from the post-Soviet transition era, valued by collectors primarily for its historical iconography and thematic connection to the Age of Discovery.
