Where it came from
The 10 Réis coin issued under the reign of King José I of Portugal represents a significant period in colonial Brazilian history. Struck in 1751 at the mints of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, these copper coins were essential for facilitating daily commerce within the colony. Their production was managed under the authority of the Portuguese Crown, reflecting the intense economic exploitation of Brazilian natural resources during the mid-eighteenth century.
The design of these copper issues adhered to standard Portuguese numismatic conventions of the era, prominently featuring the crowned shield of the Portuguese coat of arms on the obverse. These coins were intended to circulate as low-denomination fractional currency, and their circulation was widespread throughout the provinces. While utilitarian in nature, they remain highly sought after by numismatists today for the light they shed on the logistical and administrative efforts of the colonial administration in South America.
