Where it came from
The 5 Réis coin minted in 1749 during the reign of João V reflects the complex administrative structure of colonial Brazil. At this time, the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão operated with a degree of autonomy from the State of Brazil, necessitating a distinct regional monetary supply to facilitate local commerce and tax collection in the northern territories.
Struck at the Lisbon mint, these copper coins were designed to provide the necessary small change for daily transactions in the bustling colonial ports. The design follows the standard aesthetic of the period, featuring the Portuguese royal coat of arms, which served to emphasize the authority and presence of the crown across the Atlantic despite the immense geographical distance.
