Where it came from
The 2017 Australian 2-cent coin featuring Venus is part of a specialized numismatic series issued by the Royal Australian Mint. While the 2-cent denomination was officially withdrawn from circulation in Australia in 1992, the Mint periodically produces commemorative sets for collectors that feature retired denominations. This series reimagines traditional Australian imagery through the lens of space exploration and planetary themes, aligning with the Mint's focus on thematic sets that appeal to astronomy enthusiasts and numismatists alike.
The design features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, a standard for Australian coinage during this era. The reverse, specific to the Planetary Coins collection, incorporates artistic interpretations of Venus. These pieces are struck with a high-quality finish intended for display rather than commerce, reflecting the Mint’s objective to blend historical Australian currency standards with modern, conceptual design aesthetics.
