2 Dollars - Elizabeth II (4th Portrait - Australian Kookaburra)

The 2001 Australian 2-dollar Kookaburra coin is part of the long-running Australian Silver Kookaburra series, which was first introduced by the Perth Mint in 1990. Struck in fine silver, these coins are produced annually as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, though they are primarily aimed at the bullion and collector markets rather than general circulation. The 2001 issue features the iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse, a design chosen for its mature and dignified depiction of the monarch, which replaced the previous Raphael Maklouf design in 1999.

The reverse design of the Kookaburra series changes annually, showcasing the bird in various naturalistic settings, which has made the series a favorite for wildlife enthusiasts and numismatists alike. The 2001 design depicts a kookaburra perched on a branch, capturing the characteristic aesthetic of the Perth Mint’s high-relief artistry. These coins are noted for their consistent purity and high-quality strike, solidifying their reputation as a cornerstone of modern Australian numismatic offerings.
