Where it came from
The 2018 Australian two-dollar coin commemorating the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the fourth iteration of the international multi-sport event for wounded, injured, and ill veterans. The coin was released into general circulation in September 2018, serving as both legal tender and a gesture of support for the participants and the mission of the games, which were founded by the Duke of Sussex to honor the resilience of service personnel.
The coin's design features the official Invictus Games Sydney 2018 logo, characterized by the stylized 'I AM' lettering and a symbolic sunburst, on the reverse side. The obverse bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had been the standard effigy on Australian coinage since 1999. The design was received as a meaningful commemorative piece, successfully blending the numismatic tradition of Australian currency with the contemporary branding of the global veterans' sports movement.
