Where it came from
The 2016 'Dogs at War' 20-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as a commemorative piece to mark the centenary of the Anzac spirit. It serves as a tribute to the Australian War Animals Memorial Organisation, specifically honoring the canine companions that served alongside Australian soldiers in various theaters of conflict, from the Western Front to contemporary peacekeeping missions.
The reverse design, rendered by Royal Australian Mint designer Aaron Baggio, features a poignant depiction of a military dog mid-stride, flanked by elements suggesting a commemorative ribbon and floral tributes. The coin is part of a broader series highlighting the often overlooked contributions of animals in military history, and it was widely noted for its solemnity and the careful balance it strikes between numismatic tradition and evocative storytelling.
