Where it came from
The 2016 25-cent coin featuring the Kokoda Trail design was released by the Royal Australian Mint as part of the 'Anzac to Afghanistan' series. This collection was developed to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and to honor the various military campaigns in which Australians have served. The Kokoda Trail design specifically reflects the intense and harrowing jungle warfare experienced by Australian forces during the Second World War in Papua New Guinea.
The reverse design features a depiction of soldiers traversing the rugged terrain of the trail, illustrating the difficult conditions faced during the 1942 campaign. The obverse features the standard fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which has been a staple of Australian coinage since the late 1990s. As a circulating commemorative issue, the coin was intended for both general use and as a collectible memento to foster national reflection on Australia's military history.
