Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent piece, commonly known as the 'Mateship' coin, was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli. As part of a broader program honoring a century of service, the design reflects the enduring Australian concept of 'mateship'—a foundational cultural value rooted in the camaraderie experienced by soldiers during the First World War.
The reverse design features an illustration depicting two soldiers standing side-by-side, a visual representation of the bond between servicemen. The imagery was designed by the Royal Australian Mint's design team to evoke a sense of quiet solidarity and historical continuity. Upon its release into circulation, the coin was well-received by the public and numismatic community as a poignant, accessible tribute to military history rather than a traditional commemorative medallion.
