Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent coin featuring the Light Horsemen was minted by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign during the First World War. This piece serves as part of a larger Anzac Spirit collection, intended to honor the legacy of the Australian Imperial Force. The design highlights the Australian Light Horse, a mounted infantry unit that played a crucial role in the Middle Eastern theatre, capturing the historical significance of their contribution to national identity.
The reverse design, rendered with fine detail, depicts a mounted light horseman in silhouette, evoking the rugged spirit of the troops. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the standard effigy for Australian coinage of that era. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by commemorative collectors and veterans' associations for its respectful and evocative tribute to the centenary, successfully blending historical narrative with numismatic artistry.
