Where it came from
The 2012 Australian 20-cent coin featuring the Merchant Navy design was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the Australian Merchant Navy during times of war. This piece belongs to a series of circulating commemorative coins released by the Mint to honor various aspects of Australia's maritime and military history, reflecting a broader effort to bring national heritage into the hands of the public through daily currency.
The reverse design features a merchant vessel at sea, a motif intended to symbolize the vital role played by merchant mariners in transporting supplies and personnel. The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the standard effigy used on Australian coinage during that period. The coin was widely circulated and serves as a lasting tangible tribute to those who served in the merchant fleet.
