Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent coin featuring the nurses design was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli. This coin is part of a broader series honoring the service and sacrifice of Australians during the First World War, specifically highlighting the crucial contributions of the Australian Army Nursing Service. The design transition reflects a respectful shift from standard circulating currency to a commemorative medium intended to foster national remembrance.
The reverse design features a poignant illustration of a nurse, created by Royal Australian Mint designer Vladimir Gottwald. The imagery depicts a nurse in uniform, framed by the words 'Lest We Forget' and '100 Years of Service,' capturing the spirit of care provided under harrowing conditions. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by the public and numismatic community alike, serving as a functional piece of history that brought the experiences of military nurses into the pockets of everyday citizens.
