Where it came from
The 20-euro Triassic coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2013 as the first release in the five-part 'Evolution of Life' series. This series was designed to explore the history of life on Earth through paleontology, specifically focusing on the species that inhabited the region now known as Austria. The coin commemorates the Triassic period, a time of significant geological and biological change following the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
The design of the coin features a color-printed depiction of a Shonisaurus, a giant marine reptile that thrived during the Triassic. The reverse side features the classic Austrian coat of arms alongside a prehistoric landscape, reflecting the Mint's commitment to combining scientific accuracy with numismatic artistry. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by collectors for its high-quality niobium and silver composition, continuing Austria's reputation for innovative bimetallic coin production.
