Where it came from
The 3 Euro coin featuring the Hippokampus is part of the ongoing 'Color Canyon' series issued by the Austrian Mint. Introduced as a unique denomination in the Eurozone, the 3 Euro series is designed specifically for collectors, blending modern numismatic technology with themes from mythology and nature. The choice of the Hippokampus—a mythological creature with the upper body of a horse and the lower body of a fish—reflects the series' emphasis on creatures that bridge distinct realms, utilizing the mint's sophisticated color-application techniques to bring the marine details to life.
The design of the 2026 issue was spearheaded by the Austrian Mint’s design team, who aimed to create a visually striking piece that utilizes the coin's hexagonal edge and copper-nickel composition to its advantage. By focusing on the fluidity of the mythical sea horse, the designers intended to showcase the aesthetic potential of the 3 Euro format. The series has been received by the collecting community as a premium artistic offering, valued more for its intricate graphic design and low-mintage commemorative nature than for standard currency utility.
