250 Ngultrums (Leshan Giant Buddha)

Issued in 2011 by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, this 250 Ngultrum coin celebrates the architectural and spiritual majesty of the Leshan Giant Buddha. The coin was produced as part of a commemorative series highlighting significant Buddhist landmarks across Asia, reflecting Bhutan’s cultural alignment with regional heritage sites. These releases are often struck to high proof standards, intended for international numismatic collectors who prize religious iconography and intricate metalwork.

The design features a detailed relief of the Leshan Giant Buddha, carved into the cliff face at the confluence of the Min, Dadu, and Qingyi rivers in China. The craftsmanship focuses on replicating the imposing scale of the statue within a limited canvas, utilizing the contrasting textures of the coin's surface to mimic the stone aesthetic of the original monument. It serves as an example of Bhutanese commemorative minting, which frequently incorporates traditional religious motifs to appeal to both domestic citizens and global enthusiasts of Buddhist art.
