Where it came from
The 250 Ngultrum coin was minted in 2013 to commemorate the coronation anniversary of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the fifth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. As part of a broader series of commemorative issues reflecting the nation's cultural and spiritual identity, the coin serves as both legal tender and a collector's piece designed to honor the monarch’s reign and the country’s deep-rooted Buddhist traditions.
The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of the Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezig, a central figure in Bhutanese Buddhism representing infinite compassion. The design emphasizes intricate engraving techniques to capture the deity's multiple arms and serene countenance, reflecting the high standards of aesthetic craftsmanship often sought in commemorative numismatics from the Himalayan region.
