250 Ngultrums (Sun Yat-Sen)

The 2003 Bhutan 250 Ngultrum coin was minted to commemorate the historical and diplomatic connections between the Himalayan kingdom and the broader Asian region. Produced as part of a limited numismatic series, this coin serves as a reflection of Bhutan's tradition of issuing high-quality collector coinage to support the national treasury and celebrate specific cultural milestones. The choice of Sun Yat-Sen as a subject emphasizes a thematic interest in significant figures who have shaped the political and social landscape of Asia, framed within the unique Bhutanese artistic tradition.

The design of the coin features a detailed portrait of Sun Yat-Sen, the primary founding father of the Republic of China, rendered with the traditional craftsmanship expected of Bhutanese minting facilities. The reverse side typically displays the Bhutanese national emblem, reflecting the country's heraldic heritage. While primarily intended for the global collector market, these coins are technically legal tender, though their precious metal content and commemorative nature ensure they remain strictly within private collections rather than daily circulation.
