Where it came from
The 2009 Austrian 5 Euro coin commemorating the Tyrolean Resistance was minted to mark the bicentennial of the 1809 Tyrolean Rebellion. This historic uprising, led by the innkeeper Andreas Hofer, saw Tyrolean peasants and marksmen resist the occupation forces of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Bavarian administration. The coin serves as a tribute to the regional identity and the spirit of defiance that defined this period in Alpine history.
Designed by Austrian Mint artists Herbert Wähner and Thomas Pesendorfer, the coin features a portrait of Andreas Hofer on the obverse, rendered in a traditional and stoic style intended to evoke the solemnity of the resistance. The reverse highlights the mountainous landscape of the Tyrol region, symbolizing the natural fortress that aided the insurgents. The piece was well-received by collectors of Austrian commemorative currency for its clean execution and its focus on a foundational moment in the national consciousness.
