Where it came from
The 1910 Australian threepence holds historical significance as one of the first silver coins minted specifically for the Commonwealth of Australia following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1909. Prior to this, the young nation relied on British imperial currency, so the introduction of these coins was a symbolic step toward financial independence and national identity.
The design features the portrait of King Edward VII on the obverse, rendered by the Royal Mint engraver George William de Saulles. The reverse displays the Australian Coat of Arms, a design that was relatively new at the time and intended to assert Australia's sovereignty. Although Edward VII died in 1910 shortly after the coin's release, the initial 1910 issue remains highly regarded by collectors for its pristine silver content and its status as the inaugural year for the Australian silver threepence series.
