6 Pence - Edward VII

The 1910 Australian sixpence was minted during the final year of King Edward VII's reign, marking a significant transitional period in Australian numismatics. As the first year that the Commonwealth of Australia issued its own distinct silver coinage, these pieces replaced the British imperial currency that had circulated since colonization. The transition reflected Australia's growing national identity following Federation in 1901, establishing a sovereign currency system that utilized the monarch's portrait while featuring the Australian coat of arms on the reverse.

The design of the reverse, featuring the Australian coat of arms, was the work of W.H.J. Blakemore, who was tasked with creating an iconography that represented the unity of the Australian colonies. The obverse bears the royal effigy of King Edward VII designed by George William de Saulles. These coins were produced at the Royal Mint in London and shipped to Australia, serving as the foundation for the nation's independent decimal-adjacent coinage system. They were well-received by the public as a symbol of domestic fiscal autonomy.
