30 Kreuzers / ½ Guldenthaler - Ferdinand I (Klagenfurt)

The 1561 30 Kreuzer, or half-guldenthaler, was minted in Klagenfurt during the reign of Ferdinand I as Holy Roman Emperor. These issues were produced at a time when the Austrian Habsburgs were formalizing their monetary systems across their diverse hereditary lands, often utilizing provincial mints like Klagenfurt to meet local demand for coinage in the Duchy of Carinthia. The piece serves as a physical representation of the administrative and fiscal efforts required to maintain regional commerce during the mid-16th century.

The design follows the standard iconography of the era, featuring the imperial portrait and titles of Ferdinand I, intended to project authority and ensure the coin's acceptance in trade. As a half-thaler denomination, it was a practical middle-value coin designed for significant local transactions. These issues were well-regarded by contemporaries for their consistent weight and silver purity, serving as reliable currency within the evolving economic landscape of the Holy Roman Empire.
