30 Stuivers (Dutch West India Company; Recife)

The 30 stuivers coin was minted in Recife during the final days of the Dutch West India Company's presence in Brazil. These coins, often referred to as obsidional or siege coinage, were produced in 1654 as the Dutch struggled to maintain control of the colony against Portuguese forces. Because traditional minting resources were scarce or disrupted by the ongoing conflict, the Dutch authorities improvised by stamping high denominations onto simple silver plates, creating a functional currency that reflected the desperation and logistical collapse of the colonial administration.

The design of these pieces is characterized by their stark, utilitarian aesthetic, typically featuring the crowned arms of the Dutch West India Company and a clear indication of their denomination. They were created not as commemorative medals, but as necessary fiscal instruments to pay soldiers and manage remaining trade debts before the final capitulation. While they were poorly received as legitimate currency at the time due to the political instability of the region, they are now highly regarded by numismatists as essential physical markers of the short-lived Dutch colonial experiment in the Americas.
