Where it came from
The 2017 Canadian 5-cent coin featuring the centennial rabbit was minted as part of a special series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. The Royal Canadian Mint invited the public to participate in the 'My Canada, My Inspiration' design contest, resulting in five distinct designs that celebrated the nation's cultural and natural heritage across different denominations.
The reverse design, titled 'Living Traditions,' was illustrated by artist Rebecca Yanovskaya. It features a stylized rabbit, an animal deeply rooted in the folklore and oral traditions of the Anishinaabe people. The design aims to honor the enduring nature of storytelling and the historical significance of the rabbit in indigenous narratives, marking a departure from the traditional beaver motif used on standard-issue Canadian nickels.
