Where it came from
The 1998 five-dollar coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of a commemorative series celebrating the centennial of the province of British Columbia. This particular design honors Norman Bethune, a Canadian physician, medical innovator, and humanitarian who became a prominent figure in international medicine. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to his lasting legacy, capturing the spirit of a figure whose life and work spanned both Canada and China.
The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, a design standard for Canadian coinage during this period. The reverse displays a stylized artistic depiction of Bethune, crafted to emphasize his contributions to public health. The coin was produced as a non-circulating legal tender item, intended primarily for collectors and those interested in Canadian history, and was received as a respectful acknowledgment of a complex and globally significant historical figure.
