Where it came from
The 2016 5 Dollars Elizabeth II September Birthstone coin is part of a recurring series produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which celebrates each month of the year through the symbolic representation of birthstones. These coins were issued as part of a collectible numismatic program aimed at the gift-giving market, utilizing a standard 5-dollar face value while featuring high-quality silver composition and a genuine Swarovski crystal to represent the sapphire, the traditional birthstone for September.
The design follows the long-standing tradition of Royal Canadian Mint commemorative coinage, featuring the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse as rendered by Susanna Blunt. The reverse art was crafted by artist Maurice Gervais, who integrated stylized floral motifs surrounding the central crystal setting. The series was designed to be aesthetically accessible, balancing traditional Canadian iconography with contemporary design elements to appeal to both casual collectors and those interested in personalized numismatic pieces.
